Go Local! Cooking Class

This 3 hours cooking class will start by splitting your group into teams of 3-4 pax followed by a short safety briefing by our local chef.

She will then walk you through the recipes and procedures step by step followed by cooking in teams for about 2 hours. To make the experience more fun, and exciting, your group can have a friendly competition. Our chef will help you pick a winning team based on teamwork, how much fun a team has during the activity, and of course presentation.

You then move to the dining area to enjoy your meal. Learn the basic cooking techniques for Singapore’s local Traditional Chinese Dumplings (3 different fillings - chicken, shrimp, or vegetarian)

  • Fried Kway Teow (chicken, prawn or vegetarian)

  • Kueh Pie Tee

  • Ondeh ondeh cupcake.

Duration: 2-3 hours including sit-down meal in our private dining area

Level: Suitable for beginners

Group capacity: 10 Pax minimum.  Suitable for up to 60 pax (3-4 pax per cooking station)

Chinese Ink Painting

Chinese Ink Painting is an art form that started thousands of years ago. It refers to the application of paint on rice paper and typically embodies philosophical concepts. The Chinese ink painting can be a quiet scene or storytelling with a poem at the side of the painting.

In this single-session Chinese painting workshop, we will teach you how to paint peony flowers which symbolizes a happy life, happy marriage, good health, and prosperity.

Learn 2 main techniques in Chinese painting:

  • XieYi (写意) Ink and wash painting, in Chinese shui-mo (水墨, "water and ink") also loosely termed watercolor or brush painting, and also known as "literati painting".

  • Gongbi (工筆), meaning "meticulous", uses highly detailed brushstrokes that delimit details very precisely.

Beginners class schedule: Sunday 10am to 12noon

Overview:

  • Discover the traditions of Chinese painting and learn the history behind Chinese Ink painting.

  • Learn the fundamentals of Chinese painting tools and techniques, experiment with Chinese artistic tools and styles, guided by a professional.

  • The trainer will demonstrate and teach the complete process to create a peony Chinese painting.

  • Create your very own Chinese Ink painting (Peony flower) on rice paper

  • If the Art Center cancels a class/workshop, they will have the option to transfer to another date or receive a 100% refund.

  • 100% refund with seven or more days’ notice prior

  • 50% refund with six or less days notice,

  • No refunds will be made after the start of the 1st class.

Mangrove Kayaking Adventure

Specially designed for adventure seekers, this 4-hour expedition is perfect for both novice and experienced kayakers. Based on Palau Ubin, a tiny island which is home to Singapore’s last village or kampongs, as well as the Chek Jawa Wetlands, one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems, this trip is perfect for those wishing to experience Singapore’s nature.

Do not be fooled by the peacefulness of Palau Ubin because the mangroves are abuzz with wildlife! For bird-watching enthusiasts, you will be able to spot species such as the Kingfishers, Eagles, Hornbills, Herons, and Egrets – and that is just to name a few.

Come as you are because equipment and gear will be provided.

Start between 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM (depends on tide schedule).

Duration: Total of 4-hours with 2.5-hour to 3-hours water time.

Level: Open for Beginners

Activity: The journey begins with a short length of open sea kayaking before entering the mangroves. You will immediately notice a sharp difference between the choppy open sea waves and the tranquil calm waters among the mangroves.

Overview:

  • Meet the adventure leader at the Palau Ubin Head Quarters (you are required to make your own way to Palau Ubin by bumboat [local ferry] which takes approximately 15 minutes).

  • 40 minutes safety briefing.

  • 2.5 to 3hrs Kayaking.

  • 40 minutes beach up; rinse off and share your experience with the group.

Note: The itinerary schedule above may differ from participants to participants due to certain factor like kayaking proficiency, tide etc

Price: Expect to pay about US$76 per person (plus credit card charges).

Traditional Tea Appreciation Workshop

Choose from a short 20 to 30-minute introduction to Chinese tea and the art of the tea ceremony and a longer 1.5 to 2-hours workshop led by a tea master.

In both cases you will enjoy the Imperial tea that Queen Elizabeth II was served in the very same tea house.

These tea appreciation workshops can be booked as a stand alone activity or incorporated into a day tour based around Chinese culture and heritage.

We recommend booking this traditional workshop together with a second workshop at ETTE, where we put a modern twist on tea with a hands on tea blending session and talk about innovative flavour creation.

QUEEN’S TEA WORKSHOP

Duration: 20 to 30-minutes

Workshop Details:

  • Short Introduction to traditional Chinese tea brewing and the tea set.

  • Demonstration of how to brew tea in the traditional manner.

  • Guests enjoy a hands-on tea brewing session.

Tea Selection: Imperial Golden Cassia, a light fermented Oolong tea enjoyed by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II .

Tea Snacks: Tea Egg/Tea Cookie.

Price: USD 14 per person inclusive of souvenir for guests.

SHADES OF TEA WORKSHOP

Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours

Workshop Details:

  • Short history of tea - learn about how tea was discovered and the tea making process during the Tang and Song Dynasty.

  • Learn about different types of tea, the process of brewing the different teas and their benefits.

  • Chinese tea brewing demonstration for each of the 6 different types of tea.

  • Serving of tea snacks.

ETTE Modern Tea Blending Workshop

Explore the art of tea blending in this 30-minute modern tea workshop.

Tea blending or scenting is defined as the process of putting different teas together to produce a final product. This activity aims to create a well-balanced flavour using teas of different origins and characters. Combining the heritage and tradition of tea with a modern and classic design.

In this workshop you will become a “Tea Chemist” for the day! Each participant will take home their creation.

This workshop can be booked as a stand-alone activity or incorporated into one of our tours. We recommend booking this together with the Traditional Tea Appreciation class to cover both the traditional and modern aspects of tea culture.
