Summary:

A hilarious and heartwarming New York Times bestselling novel--now a major motion picture!

When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country's most eligible bachelor. On Nick's arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.

“Last year Kevin Kwan introduced summer fun readers to a cast of characters entirely foreign but somehow familiar…In China Rich Girlfriend, he continues that story but throws into the mix the recently acquired fortunes of China that take to easy street like it’s a superhighway… They offer a taste of Asian opulence served with skewering humor. Delectable wretched excess.”

“Flashy, funny... Delicious, the juicy stuff of classic high-society drama... Rich People Problems is a fun tabloid romp full of over-the-top shenanigans, like a society party brawl that ruins both a Ramon Orlina glass sculpture of the hostess’s breasts and ‘a special pig that had only eaten truffles its entire life and was flown in from Spain...’ A memorable, laugh-out-loud Asian glitz fest that’s a pure pleasure to read.”

Singapore Tours | Safe Re-opening

Singapore started easing out the circuit breaker restrictions last June 2. People can now start visiting their grandparents living in a different household, exercise outdoor but only in their immediate neighborhood and visit worship places for a maximum of 5 households. While some of the restrictions are lifted, Everyone should continue to wear a mask when doing so. Seniors should continue to stay at home.

Now, that people can go outside and for exercise and other essential things, people can visit the nearest Singapore Parks in their neighborhoods to do their exercise. Thanks to Singapore clean and green campaign, the city has a lot of beautiful parks that people can unwind and relax.

Singapore tours | Circuit Breaker

The world is fighting a war against an invisible enemy that has stopped the world. COVID-19 is so contagious that it put a stop in all travel and business. Isn’t it great to see people working together as one to fight the virus? People are contributing in their own little ways by staying at home to further prevent the spread of the Virus.

Singapore government has imposed its circuit breaker measures that helped in this prevention. Because of the Singaporeans cooperation on this, the city has started to slowly ease the restrictions in 3 Phases. Now, some businesses have opened and people can now visit their family and friends but of course, with minimal restrictions still.

A picture was taken before COVID19. Elders are advised to stay at home while people can still have some exercise observing social distancing.

The Corona Diaries - Monique | Singapore Tours

Monique is one of our recent additions to the Hello! Singapore Tours team, joining in the last quarter of 2019. She oversees the administration and bookings of our Singapore business, so you might have encountered her name in one of your email exchanges with us.

Having worked in a private Aviation company, her administration skills are impeccable. She is also a fun person to be with that will always make you laugh. Since travel has come to a standstill what keeps her busy? Below is a short interview with her.

Monique spending quality time with her family on Mothers day, especially with her son Benjie

Monique spending quality time with her family on Mothers day, especially with her son Benjie

Pre-pandemic time, the admin team was busy answering inquiries, managing booking, coordinating with the customers and our tour guides. Now that this pandemic has put travel to a stop and we have more time on our hands, what keeps you busy?

Monday to Friday I am kept busy by my 7-year old's home school from 8:30 to 15:00; it has been an interesting experience, I have never wished to voluntarily home school but given the opportunity through our circumstances, I have been pleasantly surprised by how much I have enjoyed homeschooling; it was no doubt difficult in the beginning and it was not welcomed at first but I gradually enjoyed seeing how and what my son is learning.

I have had plenty of time to bake - as I am sure most have - and try out a lot of new recipes, I now know for certain I have not missed my calling, but thankfully improved.

We have been blessed with lots of family time, cleaning, reading, hiking, exercising, and of course, TV!

Even though you manage our Singapore business you are actually based in Hong Kong. Now that Hong Kong is observing social distancing measures, what is the place that you miss visiting the most and why?

I have missed the simple pleasures of taking my son to the park, riding our bicycles to school, and going to church; but in return, we have learned to enjoy other activities, explore different places and learn new skills.  We have hiked a lot more this year than any other year; seeing areas and walking routes never walked before; we have been hiking, scooting, rollerblading, and mastering the skipping rope as a family.  Prior to COVID not one of us made use of a skipping rope, now it is almost a daily activity.

We know that you also suffer from wanderlust. When this Pandemic is finally over, are you planning to go overseas? If so, Where?

Moving to Hong Kong 3 years ago has definitely awakened an interest in areas I never thought of visiting; what a loss this would have been!

First on my list is Singapore, I want to meet (in person) all the guides guiding for Hello! Singapore Tours and I want to experience this beautiful country with my family. Second, on my list is Bali.

What is your realization in the midst of this Pandemic?

Nothing in life is certain.

After months of resting, fine-tuning our tours and media platforms we are itching to get back to the work we enjoy, and the country we love to explore with guests from all over the world!  See you soon!

Pandan Cupcake Recipe

Pandan cake is a light, fluffy, green-colored sponge cake. Other than Singapore, this dessert is also popular in other Asian countries like that of the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and especially among the Indo community, due to its historical colonial ties with Indonesia.

You can easily try this whilst you are on your Hello! Singapore tours or if you find yourself craving for that Pandan tasty dessert. We have found an easy to follow recipe that you can do at the comforts of your home.

INGREDIENTS

  • 60 g egg yolks

  • 25 g castor sugar

  • 50 g corn oil

  • 50 g young, light green pandan leaves (rinse thoroughly and drain; chop roughly )

  • 75 g undiluted fresh coconut milk blend with chopped pandan leaves; press to yield 65 g milk; discard pandan pulp1/8 tsp salt

  • 80 g cake flour

  • ¼ tsp baking powder sift with cake flour

  • 150 g egg whites

  • 60 g castor sugar

PROCEDURE

  • Measure and prep ingredients as detailed above. Line eight 180 ml molds with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 200°C.

  • Whisk egg yolks and 25 g castor sugar till thick and pale. Add corn oil. Whisk till well combined. Add 65 g of green milk and salt. Whisk till evenly mixed. Re-sift sifted cake flour and baking powder into the mixture. Whisk till just evenly mixed. Set aside. Wash whisk thoroughly.

  • Whisk egg whites till thick. Gradually add 60 g castor sugar whilst continuing to whisk. Keep whisking till egg whites just reach the firm peak stage.

  • Add egg whites to yolk mixture in 3 batches, mixing till almost even after each batch. Scrape down thoroughly. Fold till just evenly mixed. Bang mixing bowl against worktop 3-4 times to get rid of big air bubbles.

  • Fill moulds with batter, about 60 g each. Tap molds gently against worktop to level batter. Bake till cakes are golden brown and slightly springy, about 20 minutes. Cakes should crack after the first 10 minutes.

  • Transfer cakes to wire rack. Wait till cracks close up, about 5 minutes. Unmould and serve.

voila! you now have your homemade delicious pandan cupcake!

Singapore Tours | Clean and Green City

It is almost mid-2020 and the fight for COVID-19 is still far from over. Whilst borders are closed and people are told to stay inside the house and observe social distancing outside, It looks like that Mother nature is healing and its children are celebrating the serenity and peacefulness of their outside world.

It is pretty evident that this Pandemic has a positive effect on Mother nature from Dolphins returning to the canals of Venice, the decrease of air pollutions in China, and many countries, and in Singapore, you will see more of otters roaming around the city.

Singapore’s’ circuit breaker will finally end on June 2 and with stringent measures put in place, the city will gradually allow travelers to transit through Changi Airport, as it prepares to ease some COVID-19 restrictions and reopen its borders.

The Corona Diaries - Richard | Singapore Tour Guide

We are happy to welcome a recent addition to the Hello! Singapore Tours Team, Richard Kan. Richard is a graduate of Electrical Engineering with a diploma in Marketing. He has worked 30 years in the corporate world in various industries but has found passion in tour guiding thus leaving the corporate world and became a Hello! Singapore tour guide. Richard loves telling stories that he sees fit to his guests’ interests thus making his tour very personalized.

A wanderlust like everyone else, he also loves walking around ‘like a local’ every time he is overseas to discover the best local places to eat. He is passionate about Singapore and always on the go to discover different places to eat or places to visit where he can bring his guests making his tours more fun and memorable.

Now that, Singapore is still observing its Circuit Breaker measure to prevent the spread of the deadly virus, we had a chance to catch up with Richard and he shared with us his everyday COVID-19 story.

Singapore Tour guide Richard enjoying his household chores

Singapore Tour guide Richard enjoying his household chores

On a normal day, you are usually out on the streets showing our guests the beauty of Singapore. Given the travel restrictions imposed by several countries how are you spending your time now? What keeps you busy?

When the Circuit Breaker in Singapore started, I spent the first two weeks being a couch potato catching up on all the TV dramas and movies that I had planned to watch but never had the time to do so before.

Then for the next four weeks, I started on a project converting my church’s 25 years of audio cassette tapes to digital Mp3 and setting up their Audio Library server. It was a laborious task (10 hours each day) but it was fulfilling and I felt a great achievement once it was completed.

I also kept myself busy doing some domestic chores and found that I really enjoy the simple task of walking to the local wet markets and food centres to buy food for the family – It also helps me clock my daily 10,000 steps!

We know that you also suffer from wanderlust. When this Pandemic is finally over, and you can go anywhere overseas where will your wanderlust take you and why?

My planned trips this year to Moscow, Melbourne, and Seattle have been canceled by the airline. So I hope to proceed with all these trips in 2021, especially Moscow as that is on our (my wife and me) bucket list.

After the world comes out of this dark time and everyone can travel to Singapore again what is the thing or place you are most excited about showing our guests and why?

The full Hello Singapore food tour experience of course! I can’t wait to show our guests the wonderful local culture of our little red dot island and all that “Food, glorious food!” that Singapore has to offer.

What is the one thing that you this very unfortunate event taught you and why?

I realize that it is good to take a step back sometimes, take things slow and reflect. But I also should not procrastinate on completing the things that I had planned to do.

Richard’s message to our Hello! Tours guests and friends:

As the saying goes, “Change is the only constant in life”. This pandemic is certainly a huge change in all our lives, and things will be very different as we move forward. Although we all need to make significant adjustments, we can still learn new discoveries, face new challenges, gain new experiences, and make new memories. So stay safe and take care, and I hope to meet and take you to a Hello Singapore food tour soon!
