Singapore Activities | Chinese New Year

With the Chinese New Year approaching, we are entering the Year of the Rat! Don’t worry, that does not mean that we are heading for a rat invasion :-) According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first. Hence, rats are known to be clever, quick thinkers; successful, but content with living a quiet and peaceful life. Do you know your Chinese Zodiac? Ask you guide on your Singapore tour!

Hello Singapore
Singapore Tourist Guide | Meet Dan!

Welcome to a new episode of "Meet your Singapore tour guide " This is the latest blog of our series to introduce you to the people who take you on Singapore day tours. If you book your Singapore tours, chances are your tour guide might be Dan. Dan moved to Singapore many years ago for work and decided to stay! Making Singapore his home, he is full of fun facts and fascinating information that will make you feel how much Dan loves "his" Lion City. If you book a Singapore tour, with him you are sure to be in for a treat and will definitely make the most of your time here! Let's see what Dan had to say in our short interview:** What is your favourite Singlish word?--> As a Westerner, I often get surprised looks when I speak Singlish. The words I most often use are “Tahan” and “Mafan”. “Tahan” means able to withstand and I might use it when showing off that I can eat spice with my local friends. When we take that first bite of a very spicy Mala Hot Pot you might see me look across the table and ask, “Can tahan or not?” as a bit of a friendly challenge. “Mafun” means troublesome. I use it in place of “pain in the [backside]” and I feel a bit more refined. "What is your favourite makan (food) place?--> Old Airport Road hawker centre is my favourite makan place because there are many options to choose from it never gets old! My favourite foods to eat there are fried beef hor fun, popiah, and carrot cake.  **Don’t we all love a good popiah? Delicious!!! **Do you have a favourite place in Singapore?--> Again, it's hard to choose just one. For nightspots during the week, I enjoy Al Capone's at Far East Shopping Centre. It's on the luxurious Orchard Road, but it is one of the most reasonable places to have a drink and enjoy live music. They mostly play old rock blues during the week. Another favourite of mine is Going Om on Haji Lane. It is a more chilled out vibe with low-lit lanterns and live music with a Lo-Fi vibe. For an outing in the day, there are many beautiful, lesser-known parks such as the Toa Payoh Town Park that are perfect for a picnic with family and friends.  ** Tell us the funniest thing that happened to you during a tour.--> So many funny things happen on tours it's hard to choose just one. I really enjoy a clever joke and sometimes tourists are very witty. A chef was on a food tour with me and as I pointed out the old Jewish Quarter from the edge of Little India, he asked if there were any kosher delis there. I explained where he could find a good kosher deli, but it wasn't in this particular area and he quickly quipped as we walked back into the heart of Little India, "I guess there wouldn't be old delis in New Delhi." ** We definitely look forward to more of those funny incidents with you!

Always smiling… This is our Dan!

Hello Singapore
Singapore Tour Bus | Jewish History

As a multicultural country, Singapore has people from many different backgrounds. For example, on Singapore car tours, you can learn about the Maghain Aboth Synagogue which is a reminder of how far back Singapore’s multicultural roots go. Constructed in 1878, the synagogue is one of the oldest surviving Jewish buildings in Southeast Asia and stands in what used to be the country's Jewish quarter.

The Maghain Aboth Synagogue is a gem in more ways than one, providing both a snapshot of history and a glimpse into a rich culture. However, if you would like a visit on your Singapore car tours, we will need to pre-arrange it far in advance.

Singapore Tours | Roti Prata Anyone?

With Singapore being the melting pot of Asia, you will find the most delicious foods to eat! Without a doubt, one of them is Roti Prata with curry! A South-Indian flatbread made by frying stretched dough flavoured with ghee (Indian clarified butter), it is usually served with fish or mutton curry and hits the spot every single time! While you are on your Singapore tour, try different styles. The classic versions are served plain or with eggs as a filling, local menus now feature a variety of modern variations such as cheese, chocolate, ice-cream, and even durians – turning it from a main course to a dessert.

Hello Singapore
Singapore Night Tour | St. James Power Station

No doubt Singapore has some major historical buildings due to its history. One of the national monuments you might see on your Singapore trips is the St. James Power Station. Built in 1926, it was Singapore's first power station (also previously the one and only coal-fired power plant in Singapore) and supplied electricity to the nearby port and the surrounding industries, shipyards and residences. However St. James went through various phases since which you can ask your Singapore tour guide about.

St James received its name from its site - Cape Saint James. This tract of land used to belong to Temenggong Abdul Rahman, with whom Sir Stamford Raffles famously negotiated to sign the 1819 Singapore Treaty. The treaty allowed the British East India Company to set up a trading post in Singapore and marked the birth of Singapore as a British colony. Nowadays, St. James will be the HQ for Dyson. Ask your Singapore tourist guide about when old buildings are getting the URA Architectural Heritage Award and what they need to fulfill to receive it.

Hello Singapore
Money-Saving Ideas for the Holidays
Buddha’s Tooth Relic Temple - Chinatown - Singapore

Buddha’s Tooth Relic Temple - Chinatown - Singapore

If you’re planning a vacation to Singapore, you’re probably already wondering how much you’ll need to save for the trip and how you can cut costs so you can spend your holiday without worrying about money. If you plan your trip and open an online savings account at the beginning of the year, you can watch the pennies and use a specific holiday savings calculator, you’ll be cashed up and prepared for a vacation that’s stress-free and lots of fun. Here are some easy ways to avoid the temptation to spend when you could be squirrelling away that money in your holiday savings account. You can also plan ahead by setting up an automatic debit so that some of your pay goes into your holiday account. You won’t notice it after a while, but your savings will grow slowly but surely

Plan Way Ahead For Lots of Fun

If you’re going to spend the Chinese New Year in Singapore, you should be aware that resistance to shopping is futile, so you need to be cashed up and ready. You won’t be able to say no to the wide variety of festive goodies on display at this time of the year. The spicy shrimp rolls and barbequed meat ('bak kwa' ), the melt-in-the-mouth coconut cookies ('kueh bangkit' ), buttery pineapple tarts, rich prune layered cake ('lapis') and crisp rolled egg biscuits (love letters) are a few of the taste sensations offered. Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, starts weeks before the New Year date with seasonal markets, parades, lion dances and the streets lit by beautifully-designed lanterns. Revel in the bright colours and sheer exuberance of the Chinese New Year which is one Singapore festival that demands all of your energy and attention.

Cut Out Some Treats

So with that in mind, in the year or months before you leave for Singapore, you’ll no doubt have heard the cliché about the ‘latte savings habit’, but it works! The theory goes that if you stop spending your hard-earned cash on lattes and lunches, that money could go into your holiday savings account. You think it’s peanuts? Think again. Cutting out a $3.90 latte every workday (drink them on the weekend) means there’s $1,017 in savings per year. AND if you skip that $15 or $20 lunch and pack your own, you can save about $5,000. Even if you skip the bought lunch a couple of days a week, you can save money.

Get Cashed Up

It’s so easy to flip out a card to pay for whatever you want these days, rather than carry cash in your pocket, and a spending spree on the card can be hard to avoid, but it can put a huge dent in your holiday savings. Just think about that wonderful time you’ll have in Singapore if you are cashed up! So the way to prevent spending your coveted holiday savings before you leave on your trip it is to track your spending, use an app to budget and use cash rather than the card. An app can round up your change and add it to your holiday savings account, and we all know how the cents soon add up and turn into dollars over time. Train yourself to withdraw only enough cash to cover what you have budgeted for and nothing more. Once that money has been spent, don’t be tempted to use the card or spend more, just stop and watch your holiday savings grow.

Write a Shopping List

Here’s where you can really save money. Make a list of what you need, avoid the middle aisle in Aldi, and know where everything is in your local supermarket, so you don’t check everything in the shop. This way, you won’t be tempted to buy what you don’t need. Another strategy is never go shopping when you’re hungry, especially if you've left your list at home. You’ll likely end up with a trolley full of sugary stuff that’s bad for your health and bad for your holiday savings account.

Other Uses For Apps

An app can also remind you of crucial stuff you need to do before you go, like travel insurance, vaccinations, renewing your passport, visas, or taking a first-aid kit. Having these things in order can save you both time and money while on vacation so you can enjoy yourself without worrying about breaking the bank, falling foul of some disease, or forgetting your passport.

If you’re wondering where to travel, especially if you love shopping, Singapore is a must. At Hello! Singapore, a small team of local residents work as professional tour guides with a huge passion for sharing their in-depth knowledge about the country and its culture, customs and history. The feedback on their tours is amazing, so check out the website and FAQ, and fill in an online form to contact Hello! Singapore for details of what’s on offer.

We are still in the spirit of Diwali or Deepavali - The Indian Festival of Lights. Did you know that Diwali, Deepavali or Dipavali is a four-five day-long festival, which is celebrated not only by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs but also by some Buddhists every autumn in the northern hemisphere (spring in the southern hemisphere)? It is called the Festival of Lights but here the light is a metaphor for knowledge and consciousness!
